Zapco HD-BT II-A — aptX HD Bluetooth Module, Analog Output

The HD-BT II-A adds high-resolution Bluetooth streaming to the Zapco ST-D Mini Series amplifiers. It carries a dedicated 120 MHz DSP, supports aptX HD, and delivers its signal as analog output.

Why This One Is Analog

The output type is the only meaningful difference between the two HD-BT modules, and it is dictated by what the host unit can accept.

The ST-D Mini amplifiers take analog input. A module handing them digital audio would be handing them something they cannot use, so the II-A does the conversion itself and presents a line-level analog signal the amplifier can work with directly.

Matching the module to the host is therefore not a preference. The HD-BT II-D, with digital output, is the correct part for DSP-IV, ST-X III and HDSP-V processors. The II-A is the correct part here.

The Dedicated 120 MHz DSP

The module runs its own processor rather than a basic Bluetooth receiver chip. Decoding aptX HD and managing the wireless link is genuine processing work, and dedicating hardware to it means the decode and the conversion to analog are both handled properly inside the module before anything reaches the amplifier.

aptX HD, and Its Honest Condition

aptX HD supports 24-bit transmission at a substantially higher bit rate than standard Bluetooth codecs.

Both ends have to support it. A phone limited to SBC or AAC will pair and play normally, but the aptX HD path only exists when the source device speaks the codec as well. That depends on the phone, not on this module — worth checking before buying.

System Application

An ST-D Mini installation where the phone is the source and there is no head unit in the system at all. That is a common shape for a compact build — a small amplifier tucked out of sight, drivers, and a phone — and this module is what makes it work without wiring a source into the vehicle.

It also suits a motorcycle, powersports, or marine application, where a compact amplifier is doing the whole job and a wired connection is impractical.

Installation Considerations

Location determines how well Bluetooth performs. Enclosing the module in metal, mounting it behind a panel, or burying it under an enclosure will degrade range and reliability. Give it a reasonable path to where the phone will be.

Keep the analog output run short and away from power cabling. The signal is analog from the module onward, which means it is susceptible to induced noise in a way a digital connection would not be — the practical consequence of the conversion happening here rather than downstream.

Set amplifier gains with the module as the source, not with a different input, so the gain structure matches the level it actually delivers.

HF Audio Perspective

Compact builds are where wireless source matters most, because they are usually the installations with nowhere sensible to put a head unit.

An ST-D Mini amplifier fits in places a conventional amplifier does not, and the whole reason to choose one is to keep the installation small and hidden. Running a wired source to it undoes some of that. This module keeps the build as compact as it was meant to be, and does it with a codec good enough that the wireless link is not the thing holding the system back.

Check that the phone supports aptX HD. And keep the analog run short — that one is on the installer, and it is the difference between a clean system and one with a noise floor nobody can explain later.
