Zapco ST-BR — Wired Bass Remote Level Control
The ST-BR is the wired bass remote for Zapco ST-X Series amplifiers. It brings subwoofer level control to the driving position rather than leaving it at the amplifier.
Why a Bass Remote Earns Its Place
Subwoofer level is the one setting in a car system that genuinely wants to change while driving.
Recordings are not mastered to a consistent low-frequency balance — the amount of bass that sounds right on one album is too much on the next. Road noise changes with speed and surface, and it masks low frequencies disproportionately, so a level set on a quiet street is not the level that works on a highway. And the number of passengers changes the cabin's loading.
Every other adjustment in a properly tuned system should be set once and left. This one is a control, and treating it as one is the difference between a system that works everywhere and a system tuned for one set of conditions.
System Application
Zapco ST-X Series amplifiers, in any installation where the amplifier is not reachable from the seat — which describes most of them.
It suits the daily-driven build particularly well: a system running an ESB component front stage with a Zapco-driven subwoofer, where the front stage is tuned and finished and the bass level is the one thing the driver still wants a hand on.
Installation Considerations
Mount it where it can be reached without looking away from the road. A remote that requires attention to operate is a remote that gets used less than it should.
Leave enough slack in the cable that the dash or console can come apart later without disconnecting it, and route the run away from power cabling where the path allows.
Set the amplifier's own gain correctly first. The remote adjusts level within the range the gain structure establishes — it is not a substitute for setting gains properly, and using it to compensate for a gain set too low or too high gives up headroom either way.

HF Audio Perspective
This is an inexpensive part that changes how a system gets used, which is a better return than most upgrades at any price.
Systems without bass remotes tend to end up tuned to a compromise — enough bass to satisfy on the recordings that want it, which means too much on the ones that do not. The owner stops noticing and calls it the system's character.
With a remote, the tune can be set correctly and the level adjusted to the material. It is a small thing that removes a permanent compromise, and on an ST-X build it should be considered part of the installation rather than an accessory to it.
