The Z-CB100F is a 100 farad super capacitor bank with front-panel voltage and amperage indicators. It installs in the vehicle's power system between the battery and the amplifiers, and it exists to supply current faster than a battery can.

What a Capacitor Bank Does

A musical bass note is a current spike. An amplifier producing a kilowatt on a transient draws that current in milliseconds, and it draws it through however much wire sits between it and the battery.

Every one of those elements has resistance. The battery has internal resistance, the cable has resistance, the terminals and grounds have resistance. Under a sudden load the voltage at the amplifier sags, and when supply voltage sags the amplifier's output drops with it — which is heard as bass that softens exactly when it should hit hardest.

A capacitor mounted close to the amplifiers is a local reserve. It releases stored charge far more quickly than a lead-acid battery can, over the short interval where the demand exists, and recharges between transients.

Why 100 Farads Is a Different Kind of Part

Conventional car audio capacitors are electrolytic and are typically rated in the single digits of farads. One hundred farads is a supercapacitor bank — a different technology, storing on the order of a hundred times more charge in a comparable role.

That is why it weighs 22.4 kg and why it needs to be treated as a serious electrical component rather than as an accessory.

The Indicators

Front-panel voltage and amperage readouts make the bank's behaviour visible. Voltage shows what the electrical system is actually holding under load rather than at idle, and the current reading shows what is being drawn.

That information is genuinely useful during setup, because it turns "the bass seems weak on peaks" into a number you can watch while the system plays.

System Application

A high-power installation — the kind of build that pairs Zapco monoblocks with an ESB 8000 or 9000 Series front stage — where the demand on the electrical system is peaky rather than continuous.

It is a transient-load solution. That distinction matters and it is the honest one to make: a capacitor bank buffers short current spikes. It does not add energy to the system. If the vehicle's voltage is sagging on sustained output rather than on peaks, the limitation is alternator capacity, battery capacity, or wire gauge, and a capacitor will not resolve any of the three. Fix the charging system and the power wiring first; add the capacitor to handle what remains.

Installation Considerations

Mount it close to the amplifiers. The benefit comes from reducing the length of the current path under transient load, and a capacitor at the front of the vehicle feeding amplifiers at the rear gives up most of that advantage.

Pre-charge before connecting. A fully discharged capacitor of this size looks like a short circuit at the moment of connection, and connecting it directly across the battery draws an inrush current large enough to weld terminals and destroy fuses. Charge it through a resistor or a proper pre-charge device until its voltage matches the system before making the final connection. This is not optional on a bank this size.

Fuse the connection to the bank. Plan the mount for 22.4 kg — that is not a component to secure with hardware chosen for something lighter, and an unsecured mass of that weight is a hazard in a collision.

HF Audio Perspective

Capacitors have a reputation problem in car audio, and most of it is earned by the wrong ones being sold for the wrong reasons.

A one-farad capacitor added to a system with a stock alternator and undersized wire does effectively nothing, and enough of those sales have happened that the whole category is treated with suspicion. That suspicion is misdirected here. One hundred farads is a genuine reserve, and in a build where the charging system and the wiring have already been addressed, it does the specific job it is designed for.

The order of operations is what we would emphasize. Wire gauge, grounds, alternator, battery — those come first, because a capacitor cannot supply energy the system does not have. Once those are right, this is the part that keeps voltage steady through the peaks. Bought in that order it is a real improvement. Bought as a substitute for the work underneath it, it will disappoint.
