Zapco ST-A2 — 4-Channel Class D Plug-and-Play Car Amplifier

The ST-A2 is a compact four-channel Class D amplifier designed for factory-system integration, rated 50 watts RMS per channel at 4 ohms, 80 watts per channel at 2 ohms, and a maximum of 140 watts per channel. Signal-to-noise is 85dB with THD under 0.1%, across a 20Hz to 20kHz bandwidth.

It shares the ST-A1's plug-and-play input architecture, with a Class D output stage in place of Class AB.

Class D in This Application

The practical difference is heat and output. Class D produces less heat than Class AB, which matters when a compact amplifier is mounted under a seat or behind a panel with limited airflow. It also delivers more power from the same chassis — 50 watts RMS per channel against the ST-A1's 35, and 80 watts at 2 ohms.

Neither topology is the better choice in general. Class AB is the traditional pick where dynamics and sound quality lead; Class D is chosen for power density and thermal behaviour. Which suits your build depends on the mounting location and the drivers.

Four Balanced High-Level Inputs

The ST-A2 accepts four balanced high-level inputs through high-quality operational amplifiers, taking speaker-level signal directly from a factory head unit or factory amplifier with no line-output converter required.

The balanced topology rejects interference common to both conductors, which is worth having in a vehicle where signal wiring shares space with a great deal of electrical noise.

ACC and High-Level Power-On Conversion

The amplifier derives its turn-on signal from the incoming speaker-level feed when no remote lead is available — the common situation with a factory head unit, and usually the fiddliest part of the install.

System Application

Fifty watts per channel at 4 ohms, or 80 at 2 ohms, drives a component set or a full four-speaker factory replacement with meaningful headroom over a head unit's internal amplification.

The compact chassis and low heat output make it suitable for enclosed mounting locations where a Class AB amplifier of similar output would need more room to breathe.

Installation Considerations

Set the gain against the factory source's usable volume range rather than to a fixed position — factory output levels vary considerably between vehicles.

Confirm the final impedance your speakers present. The 2-ohm rating is only available if the drivers and wiring actually produce that load.

Size power and ground wire from the fuse rating and the distance from the battery, match ground gauge to power, keep the ground short, and secure it to clean bare metal on the chassis.
