Transformer Isolation and Ground Loops

A ground loop occurs when the source and the amplifier reference slightly different ground potentials. Current flows through the signal cable's shield to equalise them, and that current becomes audible — usually as a hum or a whine that rises and falls with engine speed.

A transformer passes the audio signal magnetically rather than electrically, so there is no continuous conductive path between the two grounds. The loop is broken at its source rather than filtered after the fact.

That is why the 130dB figure is achievable here. Isolation is not attenuation of noise already present — it prevents the mechanism that creates it.

Passive by Design

Because there is no active circuitry, the ASP-L2 T adds no noise of its own and requires no power connection. There is nothing to fail, nothing to draw current, and nothing to introduce its own artefacts into the signal.

The trade is that it provides no gain. Unlike a line driver, it does not raise signal voltage — it passes what it receives, isolated.

Installation Considerations

Address grounding first. A transformer isolator is the right fix for a genuine ground loop, but it will mask a poorly executed ground rather than correct it — and a bad ground causes problems beyond noise.

If the signal also needs boosting for a long cable run, a line driver is the appropriate tool. This device isolates; it does not amplify.

Transformer isolation is an old solution to a problem that has not changed, and it remains the most reliable answer to a true ground loop.

The useful thing to understand is what it is and is not for. If the noise changes with engine speed and disappears when you disconnect the signal cable, this addresses the cause directly. If the noise is present regardless of the source connection, the problem is elsewhere — a power or ground fault — and an isolator will not help.
