Zapco ASP-L6 — 6-Channel Line Driver and Signal Distributor

The ASP-L6 is a six-channel signal line driver and distributor with a 9.5-volt pre-out. It takes a line-level signal, raises its voltage, and distributes it across six channels to feed multiple amplifiers.

What a Line Driver Does

Most head units and processors output between 2 and 5 volts. Over a long cable run through a vehicle, that signal picks up noise from alternators, ignition systems, and everything else sharing space with it.

Raising the signal to 9.5 volts before that run changes the ratio between signal and noise. The noise the cable picks up stays the same; the signal it is riding on is several times larger. At the amplifier, gains can then be set lower — and since gain amplifies noise along with music, lower gain means a quieter system.

This is why a line driver improves a system that already sounds fine on the bench but has audible noise in the car.

Six Channels of Distribution

Distribution is the second function. Six outputs let one source feed several amplifiers without splitters or Y-adapters, each of which is a connection that can introduce noise or impedance mismatch.

In a multi-amplifier system — a three-way active front stage with separate bass amplification, for instance — that means one clean signal path to each amplifier rather than a chain of passive splits.

System Application

Multi-amplifier systems with long cable runs, or systems where noise has proven difficult to eliminate. It also suits builds where a source with limited outputs needs to feed more amplifiers than it has channels for.

Installation Considerations

Fit the line driver near the source, not near the amplifiers. Its benefit comes from raising the signal before the noisy cable run — placing it at the far end defeats the purpose.

Reset amplifier gains after installing it. Gains that were correct for a 2-volt signal will be far too high for 9.5 volts, and leaving them there will clip the amplifier inputs.

Line drivers are usually bought to fix a noise problem, and they often do. But they are more useful specified at the design stage than added as a remedy.

In a system with several amplifiers spread through a vehicle, the signal path is long, branched, and surrounded by electrical noise. Raising the signal level at the source and distributing it actively addresses that before it becomes a problem — rather than chasing a hum after everything is installed and trimmed back in.

It does not fix a bad ground or a poorly routed cable. Those come first. What it does is give a well-executed install more margin than it would otherwise have.
