Class AB for the Bass Channel

Choosing Class AB for a mono channel is a deliberate decision. Class D is more efficient and generates far less heat, which is why it dominates subwoofer amplification. Class AB is specified where the amplifier's behaviour takes priority over its efficiency.

The 10Hz to 30kHz bandwidth reinforces that this is not a bass-limited design. It is a full-range mono amplifier being used as one channel, with the crossover ahead of it determining its role rather than its own bandwidth doing so.

Low-Impedance Operation and Its Limits

That rating applies with music signal. The limit on sustained output is heat dissipation rather than the load. Where that heat cannot escape, the amplifier goes into protection, and repeated protection cycles can damage it.

For a Class AB amplifier producing 1,600 watts into 1 ohm, this is the central installation consideration.

System Application

A single subwoofer, or a dedicated driver in a system built from one amplifier per channel. Six hundred fifty watts at 4 ohms means it remains substantially useful even where the wiring cannot reach low impedance.

In an AP-based system it provides the bass channel with the same measurements as the amplifiers driving the front stage, which keeps the noise floor consistent across the whole system.

Installation Considerations

Mount where air can move past the heatsink. Class AB at this output produces sustained heat, and the 1-ohm rating assumes that heat has somewhere to go.

Electrical capacity is the other constraint. Sustained operation near rated output draws substantial current; the charging system, battery, and cable should be sized accordingly. Add up the fuse values, size power and ground from that total and the run distance, match ground gauge to power, keep the ground short, and secure it to clean bare metal on the frame.

The reason to choose a Class AB mono over a Class D one is consistency. In a system where the front stage runs on AP amplifiers, using the same topology and the same measurements for the bass channel means the whole system behaves the same way.

Whether that consistency is worth the heat and the installed cost depends on how the system is judged. In a competition build where the bass is expected to integrate seamlessly with a transparent front stage, it is a defensible choice. Where the subwoofer is simply providing low-end support, a Class D mono does that job with far less thermal management — and the difference will be difficult to hear.
