The 5.6K2X is the complete ESB 5000 Series two-way system: a pair of 5.165 6.5-inch mid-woofers, a pair of 5.028 28 mm soft dome tweeters, and the matched 5.6K2 CX passive crossover network.

Everything the front stage needs is in the box. One amplifier channel per side drives it.

A Crossover Designed for These Drivers

The 5.6K2 CX divides at 2.1 kHz with 12 dB/oct Butterworth filters on both sections, and that figure comes straight from the driver datasheets. ESB rates the 5.028 tweeter down to 2 kHz behind a 12 dB/oct filter; the 5.165 is rated to 4 kHz. The handover sits just above the tweeter's published floor and well inside the woofer's ceiling.

That is the difference between a matched network and a generic one. Somebody read both datasheets and chose the point where each driver is comfortable at the filter order actually being used.

Construction follows the same logic — polypropylene or Mylar film capacitors that hold their values as they age rather than electrolytics that drift, and oversized non-inductive resistors that dissipate heat without changing value or adding reactance. The network is rated for 300 W and accepts cable up to 4.5 mm (6 AWG).

The Tweeter Level Switch

A two-position high-frequency control offers 0 or −2 dB, and it is the only adjustment the system has once installed.

It exists because ESB cannot know the vehicle. A glass-heavy coupe with hard trim reflects far more high-frequency energy than a cloth-lined saloon, and a tweeter in an A-pillar aimed across the cabin reads differently from one in a sail panel closer to the ear. The −2 dB position is the correction for a system that measures or sounds bright in its actual installation.

Set it in the vehicle, doors closed, from the driving position — and set it deliberately rather than leaving it where it arrived.

The Drivers

5.165 mid-woofer: 3Ω, 160 W continuous / 320 W peak, carbon fibre reinforced composite exponential cone at 12.1 g moving mass, FEA-optimized Y35 ferrite motor with a pure copper ring for distortion control, TSW rubber surround, oversized Conex spider, 25 mm CCAW double-layer voice coil on an aluminium former.

5.028 tweeter: 4Ω, 110 W continuous / 220 W peak, carbon fibre reinforced composite dome, oversized neodymium motor, CNC-machined 7000 aluminium and brass body, dB Cloth under-dome damping, 28 mm voice coil on an aluminium former.

The tweeter's vented motor lowers its impedance peak at resonance — which is specifically what allows a passive network to behave predictably near the crossover point, and part of why 2.1 kHz works here at a 12 dB/oct slope.

System Application

A two-way front stage running from a single amplifier channel per side. A good two-channel amplifier, or two channels of a four-channel amplifier with the remaining pair on a subwoofer, covers it.

Note the load: the woofer is 3 ohms and the tweeter 4 ohms, combined through the network. Confirm the amplifier is comfortable driving the resulting impedance rather than assuming its 4-ohm rating applies.

A subwoofer is not optional. The 5.165 has 4.5 mm of linear excursion and a 9.47-litre Vas — it is a midbass driver, rated from 80 Hz behind the passive network's 12 dB/oct high-pass.

Installation Considerations

Check the 5.165's 68–76 mm mounting depth against the door before cutting.

Treat the doors. This is the single change that most affects what a 6.5-inch driver delivers, and it costs less than any component upgrade.

Mount the crossovers where the level switch stays reachable after trim is refitted — the network measures 117 × 72 × 31 mm. Keep them away from amplifier heat and power cabling.

Watch polarity on every connection. A reversed tweeter in a 12 dB/oct network produces a cancellation at the crossover point that sounds like a tuning fault and is not one.

HF Audio Perspective

This is the version of the 5000 Series two-way that most builds should start with, and the reason is arithmetic rather than sound quality.

Running the same drivers actively needs four amplifier channels and a processor. Running them through this network needs two channels. In a system where the subwoofer also has to be driven, that difference decides what amplifier the build can afford — and a well-matched passive two-way on a good amplifier beats an active two-way on a stretched one.

The active route does buy something specific: ESB rates the 5.028 down to 1.2 kHz behind a steep digital filter, against 2 kHz here. That extra range, taken off a woofer working in a door, is a genuine gain. It is also available later — the drivers are the lasting purchase, and a system built passive today can go active without replacing them.

What will decide how this sounds is not the crossover topology. It is the door treatment, the subwoofer integration, and whether the −2 dB tweeter switch gets set by ear in the vehicle. Get those three right and this system does what ESB designed it to do.
