ESB's UMA Concept at Its Highest Level of Execution
The ESB 9.UMA is ESB's flagship mid-high unit — the 9000 Series expression of the UMA concept, designed with every material and engineering decision pushed to its limit. The EISA Award citation specifically identifies the 9.UMA as a component where the UMA concept "reaches maturity and excellent performance." For ESB, that represents the culmination of a design concept that began in the 1970s.
Combined frequency response: 130 Hz to 25 kHz.
Tweeter Section
The tweeter uses a pure Japanese silk dome with resin impregnation and integrated suspension — made as a single piece to eliminate joint-induced break-up modes and reduce mass to its minimum practical level. A large high-temperature-resistant neodymium magnet drives the 25mm aluminum CCAW voice coil. A TCA (Turbulent Control Air) system controls the airflow moved by the dome, creating aperiodic damping resistance for controlled, non-oscillating energy release. A felt damper controls and reduces dome resonance. The CNC-machined billet aluminum flange allows the midrange and tweeter to be individually mounted and replaced independently using screws — an engineering detail that reflects the 9.UMA's position as a component expected to perform in demanding, long-term installation environments.
Midrange Section
The midrange uses a vacuum and autoclave-molded high-modulus carbon fiber cone — made as a single piece without a dust cap. ESB describes this manufacturing process as rarely used in speakers because of its cost, but bringing enormous benefits in terms of naturalism of reproduction and transient dynamics. The single-piece construction with no dust cap improves high-frequency dispersion regularity. A Nomex voice coil with aluminum winding contributes to the wide bandwidth of the driver. An NBL rubber surround provides progressive excursion control that becomes increasingly controlled at higher excursions. A large Conex™ spider ensures linear bidirectional excursion. A TCA system on the midrange cone creates the same aperiodic damping resistance as on the tweeter. A die cast aluminum basket, powder-coated, minimizes air resistance and resonance. Gold-plated pure copper integrated terminals accept large-gauge cables and are secured with allen screws.
System Application
The 9.UMA covers 130 Hz to 25 kHz — a bandwidth that allows a relatively low crossover point to the woofer section of the front stage. It works well in A-pillar, sail panel, upper door, and factory mid/high locations. Paired with the 9.6W mid-woofer, it forms the mid and high-frequency foundation of a complete 9000 Series front stage.
HF Audio Perspective
The 9.UMA was built for front stage systems where performance is the only consideration. The vacuum and autoclave-molded carbon cone in the midrange, the single-piece silk dome with integrated suspension in the tweeter, the TCA airflow control on both sections — these are engineering decisions that require significant cost and manufacturing capability to execute. They exist because the performance benefits are real and audible in a correctly designed and installed system.
For a system built around the 9000 Series standard, the 9.UMA is the mid-high driver the rest of the system is designed to support.
