The 5.6K3 is the ESB 5000 Series three-way driver set with all three drivers separate: a pair of 5.165 6.5-inch mid-woofers, a pair of 5.050 50 mm soft dome midranges, and a pair of 5.028 28 mm soft dome tweeters.

The passive crossover is not included. This set is built to run actively from a DSP. The 5.6K3X is the same drivers with the 5.6K3 CX network in the box.

Three Separate Drivers, Three Separate Locations

This is the configuration that gives an installer the most control, and asks the most of them.

Each driver can be placed and aimed independently — the woofer low in the door, the midrange at a door upper or kick panel, the tweeter in an A-pillar or sail panel. Every one of those positions can be chosen for what it does to the stage rather than for what the vehicle happens to allow in one location.

The cost is that all three arrive at the listener at different times, and correcting that requires delay. Run actively, that correction is available per channel. Without it, three separate mounting positions is a harder problem than two.

What Running Active Requires

Three amplifier channels per side — six in total — with a processor providing at least six outputs. A six-channel DSP amplifier covers the front stage, or a four-channel and a two-channel together.

Impedances differ across the set: the 5.165 is 3 ohms, the 5.050 and 5.028 are 4 ohms. Confirm the amplifier is comfortable at 3 ohms on the channels driving the woofers.

What the Active Filters Buy

ESB publishes each driver's usable band against filter slope, and the steeper the filter, the wider that band becomes:

• 5.165: 50 Hz – 4 kHz at 48 dB/oct, against 80 Hz at 12 dB/oct
• 5.050: 600 Hz – 5 kHz at 48 dB/oct, against 800 Hz at 12 dB/oct
• 5.028: 1.2 – 25 kHz at 48 dB/oct, against 2 kHz at 12 dB/oct

The practical consequence is that steep active filters let the midrange be crossed lower — 600 Hz rather than the 900 Hz the passive network uses — which moves more of the vocal range off a door-mounted woofer and onto a dome that can sit near ear height. In a three-way that is the single most valuable thing active operation provides.

Delay is the second. With three drivers at three distances, time alignment is what makes them behave as one source rather than three.

The Drivers

5.165 mid-woofer: 3Ω, 160 W continuous / 320 W peak, carbon fibre reinforced composite exponential cone, FEA-optimized Y35 ferrite motor with a pure copper ring, TSW rubber surround, 25 mm CCAW double-layer voice coil.

5.050 midrange: 4Ω, 120 W continuous / 240 W peak, 50 mm carbon fibre reinforced composite dome, oversized neodymium motor, CNC 7000 aluminium and brass body, dB Cloth damping.

5.028 tweeter: 4Ω, 110 W continuous / 220 W peak, 28 mm composite dome, neodymium motor, 28 mm voice coil on an aluminium former.

System Application

A build with a six-channel DSP amplifier and an installer prepared to fabricate three mounting positions per side. It is the configuration for a system where imaging is the objective and the vehicle offers somewhere sensible to put a midrange.

Where only one good mid-high location exists per side, the 5.6K3U is the same idea using the 5.UMA — the same midrange and tweeter co-located on one flange, with their alignment set at the factory.

A subwoofer is required. The 5.165 reaches 50 Hz at best, behind a 48 dB/oct filter.

Installation Considerations

Plan all three locations before cutting anything, and think about vertical spread. A midrange in a kick panel and a tweeter in a pillar puts the vocal range across a large vertical distance — workable with delay, but it is a decision, not an accident.

Give the 5.050 a sealed volume or free air behind it. Do not mount it into a door cavity shared with the woofer, where the woofer's back pressure acts directly on the dome.

Check the 5.165's 68–76 mm depth against the door, and treat the doors regardless of what else the build includes.

Six channels means six filters. Set every one against the slope table above before playing the system at volume.

HF Audio Perspective

This is the most demanding way to buy the 5000 Series, and it earns that only if the installation matches it.

Three separate drivers per side is the configuration with the highest ceiling. It is also the one where a mediocre execution shows most clearly — three arrival times, three mounting angles, three crossover regions, and no passive network hiding any of it. The processor is doing all the work, which means the tune is doing all the work.

Where that effort pays is the 600 Hz crossover. Taking the vocal range off a woofer in a door and putting it on a dome at ear height is the largest single improvement available in a car front stage, and a steep active filter is what makes it safe to do.

If the vehicle will only support one mid-high position per side, the 5.6K3U reaches most of the same place with considerably less fabrication. And if the system is going to be tuned once by ear without measurement, a passive three-way will more reliably land somewhere good than an active one tuned badly. Buy this set because the DSP and the fabrication are both in the plan — not because active is the better idea in the abstract.
