ESB Audio 5.6K3UX — 5000 Series 3-Way Speaker System with UMA + Crossover
The 5.6K3UX is the complete ESB 5000 Series three-way system in its simplest installed form: a pair of 5.165 6.5-inch mid-woofers, a pair of 5.UMA co-located mid-high units, and the matched 5.6K3 CX passive crossover.
Three drivers per side, two mounting locations, one amplifier channel per side.
What This Configuration Removes
A three-way front stage normally asks for three mounting positions per side, six amplifier channels, and a processor to reconcile three arrival times. This one asks for two positions and two channels.
The 5.UMA is what makes that possible. It carries the 50 mm dome midrange and the 28 mm dome tweeter on a single CNC-machined billet aluminium flange, at a distance and angle fixed at the factory. The pair of drivers that is hardest to integrate in a three-way arrives already aligned.
The 5.6K3 CX handles the filtering, so the system runs from a single channel per side instead of three.
Both UMA drivers are screw-mounted rather than bonded — either can be replaced without discarding the assembly, which matters on a unit built into a fabricated pillar.
Why Three Ways Is Worth the Complexity
The vocal range.
In a two-way, everything up to around 2 kHz comes from a 6.5-inch driver low in a door, working into a cavity that was never designed as an enclosure. Here that band moves onto a dome that can be mounted at or near ear height in a proper sealed volume, radiating evenly off-axis. The stage rises and voices stop originating near the listener's knee.
The woofer is left doing the one thing a door-mounted 6.5-inch driver does well.
The Crossover
The 5.6K3 CX divides at 900 Hz and 3.6 kHz, with a different filter order on each section: 12 dB/oct Butterworth low-pass on the woofer, 6 dB/oct band-pass on the midrange, 12 dB/oct Butterworth high-pass on the tweeter.
The shallow band-pass on the midrange is deliberate — it lets the dome overlap generously with the woofer below and the tweeter above, blending rather than handing off abruptly through the region where the ear is most sensitive to discontinuity. It works because the midrange has bandwidth to spare, rated 600 Hz to 5 kHz for a job spanning 900 Hz to 3.6 kHz.
Polypropylene or Mylar film capacitors hold their values as they age. Rated 300 W, terminals accept cable to 4.5 mm (6 AWG), and the network measures 136 × 99 × 35 mm.
Level Trim on Both Upper Sections
Midrange at 0 or −2 dB, tweeter at 0 or −3 dB — independently.
This is the adjustment that makes a passive three-way workable across different vehicles. The vocal range can be set relative to both bass and treble: forward in a cabin that swallows it, pulled back in one that does not. Set both by ear in the vehicle with the doors closed, and expect them to interact.
The Drivers
5.165 mid-woofer: 3Ω, 160 W continuous / 320 W peak, carbon fibre reinforced composite exponential cone at 12.1 g moving mass, FEA-optimized Y35 ferrite motor with a pure copper ring for distortion control, TSW rubber surround, oversized Conex spider, 25 mm CCAW double-layer voice coil on an aluminium former.
5.UMA midrange section: 4Ω, 120 W continuous / 240 W peak, 50 mm carbon fibre reinforced composite dome, oversized neodymium motor, Fs 630 Hz.
5.UMA tweeter section: 4Ω, 110 W continuous / 220 W peak, 28 mm composite dome, 28 mm voice coil on an aluminium former, Fs 710 Hz.
Both domes use CNC-machined 7000 aluminium and brass bodies, dB Cloth under-dome damping, and vented motors whose calibrated-hole filters lower the impedance peak at resonance — which is what allows the passive network to behave predictably near its crossover points.
System Application
A three-way front stage from a good two-channel amplifier, or two channels of a four-channel unit with the remaining pair on the subwoofer.
A subwoofer is required — the 5.165 is rated from 80 Hz behind this network's 12 dB/oct high-pass.
The load is worth checking: the woofer is 3 ohms and the mid-high drivers 4 ohms, combined through the network. Confirm the amplifier is comfortable with the result rather than assuming its 4-ohm rating applies.
Installation Considerations
Where the UMA goes is where the midrange and treble of the system will appear to originate, because the two drivers move together. A-pillar and sail panel positions put it near ear height. Aim the unit as a whole and test angles before finishing the pods.
Check the 5.165's 68–76 mm mounting depth against the door, and treat the doors — the single change that most affects what a 6.5-inch driver delivers.
Six conductors per side leave the network: two to the woofer, four to the UMA. Check polarity on all three drivers. A reversed midrange produces cancellation at two crossover points, and the resulting hole reads as a faulty driver.
Mount the crossovers with the level switches reachable after trim is refitted.

HF Audio Perspective
This is the most system for the least installation complexity in the 5000 Series, and that is a legitimate thing to want.
Every other three-way configuration asks for something more: six amplifier channels, or three fabricated positions per side, or a processor and the measurement discipline to use it. This one asks for two channels and two locations, and still delivers a genuine three-way with the vocal range on a dome at ear height.
What it gives up is adjustability. The crossover points are fixed, the slopes are fixed, and there is no delay — so the woofer and the mid-high unit arrive when the geometry says they arrive. In a car with a reasonably symmetrical layout that is a smaller problem than it sounds; in an extreme one it is the limit of the design.
The drivers are the same ones in every other 5000 Series configuration. A system built this way can go active later with the same speakers and a six-channel processor, and the crossovers come out. Bought to be installed once and enjoyed rather than developed, it is the most complete answer in the series.
