The Midrange Driver for Three-Way ESB 3000 Series Front Stage Builds
The ESB 3.90 is a 3.5-inch (90mm) cone midrange driver used in the ESB 3.6K3 three-way speaker system. It is also available as a standalone component for custom three-way builds and active front stage installations.
The 3.90 was designed to occupy the midrange frequency band — the range that carries vocal intelligibility, instrument texture, and a significant portion of what listeners perceive as musical detail.
Design
The 3.90 uses a pressed paper cone with waterproof treatment. A twin symmetrical wave rubber surround supports controlled cone movement during both low-level and high-output operation. The driver uses a Y-35 ferrite magnet motor consistent with the 3000 Series design approach.
Specifications: 4 ohm nominal impedance, 60W nominal power handling, 120W transient, 150 Hz to 7 kHz frequency response, 91.5 dB sensitivity at 2.83V/1m.
System Application
In a three-way system, the 3.90 handles the frequencies between the woofer and tweeter. It works well in A-pillar locations, sail panels, upper door positions, and custom fabricated locations aimed toward the listening position.
Used with the 3.165 woofer and 3.28 tweeter, the 3.90 completes the ESB 3.6K3 system. It is compatible with the 3.6K3 CX and 3.6K3HE CX passive crossover networks, and works well in active configurations with DSP control.
HF Audio Perspective
The quality of the midrange driver in a three-way system has a direct impact on vocal clarity and the sense of instrument realism. A midrange that performs inconsistently or inaccurately in its frequency range cannot be corrected by the tweeter or woofer around it.
The 3.90 was designed to handle the midrange frequencies accurately and consistently at a practical price point. For enthusiasts building a three-way 3000 Series front stage, it provides the midrange capability the system is designed around.
