A Competition-Grade 4-Inch Midrange with Twin Magnets and Copper Ring
The ESB 9000 Series 9.4M is a 4-inch (100mm) cone midrange driver — the larger of the two 9000 Series midrange options, incorporating additional engineering features not present in the 9.3M. It is designed for installations where the larger cone format is appropriate and where the additional motor complexity of the 9.4M provides a specific performance advantage.
What Makes the 9.4M Different from the 9.3M
The 9.4M uses a twin coupled neodymium magnet system — two high-temperature-resistant neodymium magnets of a grade ESB describes as one of the most powerful motor magnet structures available for this size of car audio midrange. A pure copper ring placed in the air gap reduces voice coil inductance — the same design approach used in the 9.1T-28 tweeter — providing better high-frequency response accuracy and improved handling of rapid transient signals. A laminated aluminum dust cap extends the driver's high-frequency response upward and helps equalize and linearize the frequency response at the top of the midrange band. A CNC-machined aluminum ring secures the rubber surround on the outer edge, ensuring consistent fastening and centering.
Shared 9000 Series Construction
Vacuum and autoclave-molded high-modulus carbon fiber cone. Die cast aluminum powder-coated basket verified by FEM analysis. TCA airflow control system. Lightweight Nomex voice coil with aluminum winding. NBL rubber surround. Large balanced Conex™ spider. Optional CNC aluminum grille available separately.
System Application
The 9.4M is designed for installations where additional cone surface area, higher motor force, or a lower crossover point to the midrange section is part of the system design. It works well in upper door, sail panel, and custom fabricated locations. Paired with the 9.6W woofer and 9.1T-25 or 9.1T-28 tweeter, it completes the three-way 9000 Series front stage with more output capability than the 9.3M provides.
HF Audio Perspective
The 9.4M is not automatically the better choice over the 9.3M. The right midrange for the system depends on the installation, the crossover configuration, and what the system design requires from the midrange driver. When the 4-inch format, the twin magnet system, and the copper ring align with what the system needs, the 9.4M is the correct driver. When the 9.3M is the right fit, choosing the larger driver does not improve the result.
The decision should be driven by system design, not by the assumption that bigger is better.
