What Rear Speakers Are Actually For

This is worth being straight about, because rear speakers are the most misunderstood part of a car system.

In a properly built system the stage comes from the front. Everything the listener is meant to locate — voices, instruments, the sense that the music is happening across the windscreen rather than around their head — is produced by the front speakers. Rear speakers do not contribute to that, and turned up too far they actively work against it by pulling the image backward.

What rears do well is fill. They give the cabin a sense of space rather than a sound that stops at the B-pillar, and they matter enormously to passengers in the back seat, who otherwise hear the front stage from behind and off-axis.

In an A6 — a car that carries rear passengers as a matter of course — that is not a small consideration.

Why Direct Fit Matters Here Too

The rear location has the same problems as the front, with less attention paid to them.

An adapter ring adds depth and creates a joint that leaks unless it is sealed, letting the driver's rear output wrap around and cancel its own output at low frequencies. A spliced harness adds a connection in a panel that moves. Neither is necessary when the driver matches the opening the car already has.

Rear speakers also tend to be the ones nobody goes back to. Getting the mechanical installation right the first time matters more when the panel is unlikely to come off again.

The Factory Processing

The A6's head unit applies equalization designed around the factory drivers, and replacing those drivers does not change the curve. New speakers inherit a correction written for the old ones.

In practice the result is still a clear improvement, because the new drivers have more capability than the correction demands of them. The ceiling is set by the processing, and a DSP is what moves it — but that is a separate stage, and this system works properly on the factory amplifier as delivered.

System Application

An A6 already fitted with, or being fitted with, the A6 Front 200. Matching the rear to the front keeps the tonal character consistent front to back, which matters more than it sounds — mismatched rears are audible as a change in colour when the balance shifts.

It also stands alone as a worthwhile upgrade in a car that regularly carries rear passengers, or where the factory rear speakers have failed.

If the budget covers only one end of the car, the front system is the one to do. The stage lives there.

Audi has built several A6 generations and the factory audio options differ substantially between them. Confirm before ordering:

Installation Considerations

Rear door cards and parcel shelf trims have their own fastener patterns and their own ways of breaking. Work slowly and expect at least one clip to need replacing.

Seal the mounting. A rear speaker firing into an unsealed cavity loses low frequency output the same way a front one does, and in a rear door there is usually less material to work with.

Set the front-to-rear fader deliberately once everything is in. The temptation after fitting new rear speakers is to bring them up because they now have something to give — and that is exactly how a good front stage gets pulled apart. Set the fader by listening from the driver's seat, then check it from the back.

Rear speakers are where car audio money is most often spent for the wrong reason and least often spent for the right one.

The wrong reason is expecting them to make the system sound better from the driver's seat. They will not, and pushed up far enough they will make it worse. The right reason is that an A6 is a car people ride in, and the back seat of a car with tired factory rear speakers is a noticeably worse place to sit than it needs to be.

Buy these because the car carries passengers, because the factory rears have given up, or because a front upgrade has made the rears sound obviously mismatched — that last one is real, and it is the most common reason people come back for them.
