The Q5 Front 200 is a two-way front system from ESB's 6000 Series Car Special line, built for the Audi Q5's factory front speaker location — 200 mm diameter, factory mounting, factory connector. Sold as a pair.

ESB lists it as a separate part from the A4 system despite the shared 200 mm format, which is worth knowing when cross-shopping the two.

The Q5 Is Not an A4 With a Taller Roof

Acoustically the two cars are quite different, and the difference is not subtle.

Cabin volume is the first factor. A larger interior means low frequencies have further to travel before they reflect, which changes where the cabin's resonant modes sit and how much reinforcement the vehicle gives to bass. A saloon and an SUV built on related platforms behave differently below 100 Hz for reasons that have nothing to do with the speakers.

The second is the boundary behind the listener. A Q5's rear cargo area opens into the cabin; an A4's boot does not. That changes the low-frequency loading of the whole space.

ESB carries separate part numbers for the two applications. What that tells you is that the Car Special line treats them as distinct rather than as one fitment with two labels — which is the point of a vehicle-specific range.

Why Direct Fit Is Worth Paying For

A universal 8-inch driver in this location needs an adapter ring and a harness adapter, and both cost something real.

The ring adds depth in a dimension that is already tight behind the door card, and it creates a joint. If that joint is not sealed — and in most installations it is not — the driver's rear output leaks around to the front and cancels the midbass the upgrade was meant to deliver. It is the most common reason a good speaker underperforms in a door.

The harness adapter adds a connection that did not exist when the car was built, in a panel that moves every time the door shuts.

A driver made to the vehicle's own specification uses the factory hole, the factory fixings, and the factory plug, and none of that applies.

The 200 mm Advantage

Eight inches of cone in a front door is more than most vehicles offer, and it is the reason this platform rewards a driver upgrade.

Radiating area is roughly 60 percent greater than a 6.5-inch driver's, which means the same output is produced with less cone travel. Distortion in a moving-coil driver rises with excursion more than with almost any other variable, so a larger cone doing the same job stays cleaner at the volumes people actually use.

What the Factory System Still Controls

The head unit's equalization was written around the drivers being removed, and it does not change when they are replaced. New speakers inherit a curve designed for the old ones — usually a low-frequency boost compensating for a woofer that could not deliver, and shaping around an inexpensive tweeter.

The improvement is still substantial, because the new drivers have capability the correction is not asking for. But the ceiling belongs to the processing, and a Zapco DSP between the factory amplifier and the speakers is what lifts it. That is a later stage. This system is complete as it stands and runs on the factory amplifier.

Installation Considerations

Disconnect the battery before removing door cards. Audi door wiring may include airbag or pressure-sensor circuits and deserves the corresponding caution.

Treat the doors while they are open. An SUV carries more road and tyre noise into the cabin than a saloon does, which raises the noise floor the system has to work above — deadening the outer skin does double duty here, improving the speaker's environment and reducing what it has to compete with.

Seal the inner skin around the driver. An 8-inch cone in a leaky door gives up midbass it does not have to.

The interesting question on this product is why it is not simply the A4 system in a different box, and the answer is that vehicle-specific means the vehicle, not the hole.

Two cars can take the same diameter driver and still be different acoustic problems.
