The Mid-Woofer Foundation of the ESB 3000 Series Front Stage

The ESB 3.165 is the mid-woofer used in the 3.6K3U, 3.6K3, and 3.6K2 speaker systems. It is also available as a standalone driver for custom builds, active configurations, and installations where a capable mid-woofer is needed without a complete kit.

Understanding what the 3.165 was designed to do helps explain what makes it the right foundation for the 3000 Series front stage.

Design

The 3.165 basket was engineered to resist torsional deformation. This keeps the cone properly aligned relative to the magnetic gap — a factor that directly affects distortion and consistency during sustained operation at varying output levels.

The pressed paper cone with waterproof treatment provides the balance of low mass, sufficient rigidity, and natural self-damping that ESB's 3000 Series design approach is built around. A Y-35 grade ferrite magnet motor provides the driving force for consistent, controlled cone movement.

Specifications: 4 ohm nominal impedance, 120W nominal power handling, 240W transient, 65 Hz to 9 kHz frequency response, 91.5 dB sensitivity at 2.83V/1m.

System Application

The 3.165 is designed for door installations as the woofer and midbass driver in a two or three-way front stage. It works with passive crossovers (3.6K3 CX, 3.6K3HE CX, 3.6K2 CX) for passive systems, and with active crossovers for DSP-based installations.

A mid-woofer is not simply a bass driver. It handles low frequencies and the lower midrange together — the range that includes bass guitar, kick drum, and the body of most instruments. How accurately that range is reproduced has a direct impact on how the rest of the front stage sounds.
