ESB 4.165 — 6.5-Inch Component Woofer
The 4.165 is the bass and lower midrange foundation of the 4000 Series front stage. It is designed for builders running real amplification who need a woofer that stays controlled and defined as the system works harder — in a two-way build handling everything below the tweeter, or in a three-way build handing off to a dedicated midrange.
Key Design Features
The die cast aluminum basket maintains the driver's internal geometry under load — compared to traditional stamped designs, it keeps the voice coil aligned in the magnetic gap as excursion forces increase, and moves heat away from the motor during sustained use. The N52 neodymium motor provides a stronger field for improved cone control at high excursion. Together these produce bass with texture and pitch rather than just volume, and a lower midrange that stays clear when mixes get dense. The 50Hz lower limit gives the front stage genuine reach before the subwoofer takes over, which simplifies the blend between the two.
System Application
Active systems: dedicated woofer channel with DSP crossover control. Passive systems: the 4.6K2 CX (two-way) or 4.6K3 CX (three-way) crossovers. Suited to SQ front stages, SQL builds where the front stage keeps pace with real output, and daily drivers with serious amplification. Fits standard 6.5-inch door locations; door treatment and a solid baffle let the driver deliver its full capability. In a two-way build it pairs with the 4.28 tweeter; in a three-way build, with the 4.75 or 4.100 midrange and the 4.28 above it.
Specifications
Impedance: 4 ohms. Power handling: 150W continuous, 300W transient. Frequency response: 50Hz–6kHz. Sensitivity: 92.5dB.
HF Audio Perspective
The woofer determines whether a front stage stays composed or comes apart when the volume rises. The 4.165 is for the system that gets driven — where the 3000 Series foundation is no longer enough margin for the amplification and listening levels involved. Its performance is finished in the door: treatment, mounting, and amplifier matching are where this driver's capability becomes the system's result.
