The Reference Mid-Woofer Foundation of the ESB 8000 Series

The ESB 8.165 is the mid-woofer that anchors the entire 8000 Series — a 6.5-inch driver built with CNC-machined 7000 aluminum alloy construction and FEM-optimized motor design. It is the lowest-distortion, most precisely constructed mid-woofer ESB produces for car audio.

Design

The 8.165 basket is machined from 7000 aluminum alloy by CNC numerical control. This manufacturing approach produces a structure with practically zero tolerances — consistent geometry from unit to unit, maximum energy transfer from voice coil to cone, improved low-frequency efficiency, and an absence of resonances in the midrange that lower-grade basket materials introduce. The same material and manufacturing approach used for the tweeter body is used for the woofer basket — a deliberate decision to maintain construction consistency across the full system.

The cone uses non-pressed paper with a water-repellent treatment — the material ESB has consistently identified as the best compromise between damping and rigidity for natural, uncolored sound reproduction. An oversized Y-35 magnet guarantees sufficient magnetic energy throughout the voice coil excursion range, ensuring the coil operates within a consistent magnetic field even at the limits of travel. The large diameter voice coil uses an aluminum former for heat dissipation. Voice coil ventilation is achieved through large slotted basket openings — shaped to minimize turbulence noise — protected by a dust filter. The cable clamp is designed to accept large-gauge wire.

System Application

The 8.165 is the woofer section in all 8000 Series speaker systems. It is also available as a standalone driver for custom builds and active system configurations requiring the highest-quality mid-woofer ESB produces. It works with the 8.6K3 CX and 8.6K2 CX passive crossover networks, and supports active integration with DSP.
