The Mid-Woofer That Defines What ESB's Engineering Can Produce

The ESB 9000 Series 9.6W is ESB's most advanced mid-woofer — a 6.5-inch driver incorporating vacuum and autoclave-molded carbon fiber cone construction, an underhung voice coil design, and a high-temperature-resistant neodymium magnet system. The EISA Award citation describes the 9.6W specifically: "the carbon fibre membrane is made under vacuum in an autoclave, a technology rarely used in speakers because of its cost, but incredibly efficient."

Underhung Voice Coil Design

The 9.6W uses an underhung voice coil — a design where the voice coil winding length is shorter than the height of the magnetic gap. This means the voice coil remains fully immersed in the magnetic field throughout most of its excursion. ESB describes this as allowing lower distortion at low excursions and more precise control over voice coil movement. It is a fundamentally different approach from the overhung designs used in most car audio woofers, and it requires a more powerful and precisely manufactured magnet system to implement correctly.

Design

The cone is high-modulus carbon fiber molded under vacuum in an autoclave — a manufacturing process that produces extraordinary rigidity at minimal mass. The pole cup is designed using magnetic flux analysis software for perfect, homogeneous gap saturation. A generously sized high-temperature-resistant neodymium magnet provides the magnetic force needed to drive an underhung voice coil correctly. The pole yoke includes special internal ventilation to protect voice coil longevity. The cast aluminum powder-coated basket minimizes air resistance and resonance per FEM analysis verification. A Conex™ spider with balanced progressive stiffness provides controlled, consistent excursion. An NBL rubber surround ensures smooth movement at low excursions that becomes progressively more controlled as excursion increases. A CNC-machined aluminum ring secures the surround on the outer edge. Gold-plated terminals accept large-gauge cables.

Specifications: 4 ohm nominal impedance, 180W nominal power handling, 360W transient, 48 Hz to 5 kHz frequency response, 91.5 dB sensitivity at 2.83V/1m.

Designed for Real-World Installation

The 9.6W is designed for door installations as the woofer and midbass foundation of a 9000 Series front stage. Paired with the 9.UMA, 9.4M, or 9.3M midrange, and the 9.1T-28 or 9.1T-25 tweeter, it provides the low-frequency foundation for ESB's most advanced front stage system. An optional CNC aluminum grille is available separately.

HF Audio Perspective

The 9.6W is a driver for systems where performance is the sole consideration and the installation will be executed to match that standard. The underhung voice coil, the autoclave-molded carbon fiber cone, and the high-temperature-resistant neodymium magnet are not incremental improvements over the 8.165. They are a fundamentally different set of engineering decisions that require a specific level of system design, installation quality, and amplification to realize their capability.
