ESB DB2-6.5 — 6.5-Inch High-Efficiency Mid-Woofer
The DB2-6.5 is a purpose-built high-output driver from ESB's DB Series — the DBBURN line ESB developed for builders who need increased efficiency, higher output capability, and a front stage designed around those goals. It is designed for SQL and SPL-adjacent builds where the front stage has to keep pace with high-output subwoofer systems — applications where traditional sound quality-focused drivers may not be the ideal solution. Sold individually; order two for a stereo front stage.
Key Design Features
Efficiency is the defining number here: 94.5dB sensitivity means the DB2-6.5 produces significantly more output per watt than a conventional mid-woofer — and paired with 170 watts of continuous handling, the ceiling sits far above where most front stages operate. The FEA-optimized magnetic circuit and ESB's high-control MM design keep that output linear and low in distortion, helping maintain control and consistency during demanding playback conditions. The 1.5-inch Kapton voice coil — aluminum wire core with pure copper cladding — is built for sustained high-power operation without thermal compression, which is what separates a driver that plays loud from a driver that stays loud.
System Application
The DB2-6.5 belongs in high-output builds: SQL systems where the front stage matches serious subwoofer sections, demo vehicles, and competition-adjacent daily drivers. Its 85Hz–9kHz response covers the front stage range above the subwoofer crossover, in two-way configurations with a high-output tweeter or as the mid in a high-efficiency three-way. Pair it with amplification that can use its capability — the Zapco ST-X or Z-II series channels are the natural match. Fits standard 6.5-inch mounting locations; door treatment matters even more at these output levels than in an SQ build.
Specifications
Nominal impedance: 4 ohms. Power handling: 170W nominal, 340W transient. Frequency response: 85Hz–9kHz. Sensitivity: 94.5dB (2.83V/1m). Voice coil: 1.5-inch Kapton, aluminum wire core with pure copper cladding. Sold individually.
HF Audio Perspective
High-efficiency driver design requires balancing output, control, and reliability — and the DB Series is ESB's approach to getting that balance right. When DBBURN launched, the feedback came from SPL competitors and quality-focused listeners alike, and this driver carries that same intent. The DB2-6.5 fits the builder whose subwoofer section is already serious and whose front stage is the next part of the system to bring up to that level. Give it the amplifier power it is built for, treat the doors, and the front stage keeps pace with everything behind it.
