ESB 2.UMA: 2000 Series Mid-High Unit (2.5" Midrange + 1" Tweeter)

The ESB 2.UMA is the mid-high section of the 2000 Series three-way front stage — a single housing that carries a 2.5-inch (65mm) midrange and a 1-inch (25mm) silk-dome tweeter together as one unit. It's the mid-high half of the ESB 2.6K3U three-way system, and it's also sold on its own for custom three-way builds. Sold as a pair.

How the ESB UMA Format Works

ESB has built UMA drivers around the same idea since the 1970s: bring the midrange and tweeter output as close together as practical, toward a single virtual source. That's the ESB engineering story. Here's what it means for your install — when the two drivers share one housing, their physical relationship is set before installation begins. You're not solving the separation between a tweeter in one spot and a midrange somewhere else, then tuning your way back to coherence.

ESB 2.UMA Design and Build

The tweeter uses a silk-impregnated fabric dome with a damped outer suspension to keep the top end smooth and free of edge resonance. The midrange is a waterproof-treated pressed-paper cone — light enough to stay responsive, stiff enough to stay composed. Both drivers sit on high-grade neodymium motors, and the voice coils use an aluminum former wound with a double layer of copper over an aluminum core.

The 2.UMA is a 4-ohm load with a stated frequency response of 130 Hz to 25 kHz. Plan on 40–160W RMS for the midrange and 20–110W RMS for the tweeter.

Where the 2.UMA Fits in a 2000 Series Three-Way

The 2.UMA covers midrange and highs as one unit and is designed to sit on top of the ESB 2.165 II mid-woofer, completing a 2000 Series three-way front stage. A-pillars, sail panels, upper door corners, and factory mid/high pods are its natural homes — anywhere it can face the listener more directly than a low door location allows.

It runs passive off a compatible crossover, or active in a DSP-based system.

Who the ESB 2.UMA Is For

This is the front-stage mid-high for someone stepping into a three-way system for the first time, or building one where the budget has to be spent carefully. The payoff of the UMA format here isn't a spec-sheet number — it's that one of the harder physical relationships in a three-way, the one between the midrange and tweeter, is handled before you pick up a drill.

Three-way front stages depend heavily on how the midrange and tweeter behave together. Mount those two drivers separately and you take on another set of variables — spacing, mounting angle, acoustic relationship, phase — that all become part of the install and the tune.

The UMA format settles that relationship at the hardware level by placing both drivers in one housing. It stays consistent from one car to the next, while you stay free to shape the larger system through placement, crossover design, time alignment, and tuning.

Paired with the 2.165 II woofer and given proper amplification, door treatment, and tuning, the 2.UMA gives a three-way build a predictable starting point. It doesn't do the whole job on its own — no mid-high driver does — but it removes one of the variables that most often makes a first three-way build harder than it needs to be.
